The Relaxation Factor of Spas Essay - 1086 Words
The Relaxation Factor of Spas Most people get a look of relaxation on their face when someone says the word, spa. The imagery of mud baths, facials, manicures, pedicures, and massages triggers a feeling of complete relaxation. Many different types of people visit spas. A writer for About.com, Julie Register, explains the different types of people who visit spas. She says, ââ¬Å"people like a traveler that has jet lag, a mother who would like to break away from her children for awhile, or even a person who is experiencing acne, visit spasâ⬠(Register). While looking for the origin of the word ââ¬Å"spa,â⬠I found on the internet that there are many possible origins. Julie Register from About.com says a possible origin is from theâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Thermaes could be found all over the Roman Empire, even in places like restaurants they â⬠¦became a central entertainment complexâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ (Register). Jo Foley, a writer for Hilary Spa and Beauty, also says that spas began in another way. This second way was in a small town in Belgium. This small town was known for a ââ¬Å"â⬠¦place where mineral springs or healing waters popped out of the ground to lavish their therapeutic properties on the illâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ (Foley). This is somewhat related to what Register was saying. Both authors credit that the use of water was the beginning of spas. These places were known for offering people rest and relaxation. Spas today are primarily known for rest and relaxation. Today, when someone thinks of the word spa, many people think of vacation. I can think of two reasons for this. One reason is because many people go on vacation to relax, the same with going to a spa for relaxation. The other reason is, many people go to the spa for vacation. Once a year, I got to a spa for vacation. Spas today are very similar to what they were in ancient times. Most spa treatments involve water and the rituals that evolve around it (Register). Register also explained that There have been many recent additions to spa water therapies in recent times. The Jacuzzi whirlpool, a central fixture in many modern spas, was invented in the 1950ââ¬â¢s, followed by Hydrotherapy Tubs, Swiss Showers, Scotch Hoses, and Vichy Showers. â⬠¦TheShow MoreRelatedA Short Note On Spa Services And Wellness Spa1466 Words à |à 6 Pagesservices listed under a health or wellness spa. AID Atlanta is a non-profit organization striving to help provide HIV/AIDS services, care, and education in the highest ranked city in the United States. To address the communication problem, we must understand that there have been many alternative names that human-beings have given to HIV/AIDS and the amount of information and knowledge of the sexually transmitted disease has gone into overload since the huge epidemic, primarily during the twentieth century. This overload of information has caused many to disregard the issues and as an ending result caused many to focus on the issue and factors associated with HIV/AIDS as much as many once did in the past. Although HIV/AIDS no longer dominate the headlines, we must wonder are health professionals and AID advocates still giving out all the clear signs because it is apparent that HIV/AIDS are still a danger to society. AID Atlanta forcefully wants to bring awareness to new information, testing, and treatment, and other sub-topics that are constantly being bypassed because of the communication problem and overload of information. Night World Soulmate Chapter 3 Free Essays
I he sleek white limousine raced through the night like a dolphin underwater, carrying Thierry Des-couedres away from the airport. It was taking him to hisLas Vegas mansion, white walls and palm trees, limpid blue fountains and tiled terraces. Rooms full of artwork and museum-quality furniture. We will write a custom essay sample on Night World : Soulmate Chapter 3 or any similar topic only for you Order Now Everything anyone could ask for. He shut his eyes and leaned back against the crimson cushions, wishing he were somewhere else. ââ¬Å"How wasHawaii , sir?â⬠The driverââ¬â¢s voice came from the front seat. Thierry opened his eyes. Nilsson was a good driver. He seemed to be about Thierryââ¬â¢s own age, around nineteen, with a neat ponytail, dark glasses despite the fact that it was nighttime, and a discreet expression. ââ¬Å"Wet, Nilsson,â⬠Thierry said softly. He stared out the window. ââ¬Å"Hawaiiwas veryâ⬠¦ wet.â⬠ââ¬Å"But you didnââ¬â¢t find what you were looking for.â⬠ââ¬Å"No. I didnââ¬â¢t find what I was looking for â⬠¦ again.â⬠ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m sorry, sir.â⬠ââ¬Å"Thank you, Nilsson.â⬠Thierry tried to look past his own reflection in the window. It was disturbing, seeing that young man with the white-blond hair and the old, old eyes looking back at him. He had such a pensive expression â⬠¦ so lost and so sad. Like somebody always looking for something he canââ¬â¢t find, Thierry thought. He turned away from the window in determination. ââ¬Å"Everything been going all right while Iââ¬â¢ve been gone?â⬠he asked, picking up his cellular phone. Work. Work always helped. Kept you busy, kept your mind off things, kept you away from yourself, basically. ââ¬Å"Fine, I think, sir. Mr. James and Miss Poppy are back.â⬠ââ¬Å"Thatââ¬â¢s good. Theyââ¬â¢ll make thenext Circle Daybreak meeting.â⬠Thierryââ¬â¢s finger hovered over a button on the phone, considering whom to call. Whose need might be the most urgent. But before he could touch it, the phone buzzed. Thierry pressed send and held it to his ear. ââ¬Å"Thierry.â⬠ââ¬Å"Sir? Itââ¬â¢s me, Lupe. Can you hear me?â⬠The voice was faint and broken by static, but distant as it was, Thierry could hear that the caller sounded weak. ââ¬Å"Lupe? Are you all right?â⬠ââ¬Å"I got in a fight, sir. Iââ¬â¢m a little torn up.â⬠She gave a gasping chuckle. ââ¬Å"But you should see the other wolf.â⬠Thierry reached for a leather-bound address book and a goldMont Blanc pen. ââ¬Å"Thatââ¬â¢s not funny, Lupe. You shouldnââ¬â¢t be fighting.â⬠ââ¬Å"I know, sir, but-ââ¬Å" ââ¬Å"Youââ¬â¢ve really got to restrain yourself.â⬠ââ¬Å"Yes, sir, but-ââ¬Å" ââ¬Å"Tell me where you are, and Iââ¬â¢ll have somebody pick you up. Get you to a doctor.â⬠Thierry made a practice mark with the pen. No ink came out. He stared at the nib of it in mild disbelief. ââ¬Å"You buy an eight-hundred-dollar pen and then it doesnââ¬â¢t write,â⬠he murmured. ââ¬Å"Sir, youââ¬â¢re not listening to me. You donââ¬â¢t understand. Iââ¬â¢ve found her.â⬠Thierry stopped trying to make the pen write. He stared at it, at his own long fingers holding the chunky, textured gold barrel, knowing that this sight would be impressed on his memory as if burned in with a torch. ââ¬Å"Did you hear me, sir? Iââ¬â¢ve found her.â⬠When his voice came out at last, it was strangely distant. ââ¬Å"Are you sure?â⬠ââ¬Å"Yes. Yes, sir, Iââ¬â¢m sure. Sheââ¬â¢s got the mark and everything. Her name is Hannah Snow.â⬠Thierry reached over the front seat and grabbed the astonished Nilsson with a hand like iron. He said very quietly in the driverââ¬â¢s ear, ââ¬Å"Do you have a pencil?â⬠ââ¬Å"A pencil?â⬠ââ¬Å"Something that writes, Nilsson. An instrument to make marks on paper. Do you have one? Quick, because if I lose this connection, youââ¬â¢re fired.â⬠ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢ve got a pen, sir.â⬠One-handed, Nilsson fished in his pocket and produced a Bic. ââ¬Å"Your salary just doubled.â⬠Thierry took the pen and sat back. ââ¬Å"Where are you, Lupe?â⬠ââ¬Å"The Badlands of Montana, sir. Near a town called Medicine Rock. But thereââ¬â¢s something else, sir.â⬠Lupeââ¬â¢s voice seemed less steady all of a sudden. ââ¬Å"The other wolf that fought me-he saw her, too. And he got away.â⬠Thierryââ¬â¢s breath caught. ââ¬Å"I see.â⬠ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m sorry.â⬠Lupe was suddenly talking quickly, in a burst of emotion. ââ¬Å"Oh, Thierry, Iââ¬â¢m sorry. I tried to stop him. But he got away-and now Iââ¬â¢m afraid heââ¬â¢s off tellingâ⬠¦ her.â⬠ââ¬Å"You couldnââ¬â¢t help it, Lupe. And Iââ¬â¢ll be there myself, soon. Iââ¬â¢ll be there to take care of-everything.â⬠Thierry looked at the driver. ââ¬Å"Weââ¬â¢ve got to make some stops, Nilsson. First, the Harman store.â⬠ââ¬Å"The witch place?â⬠ââ¬Å"Exactly. You can triple your salary if you get there fast.â⬠When Hannah got to Paul Winfieldââ¬â¢s house the next afternoon, the sheriff was there. Chris Grady was an honest-to-goodness Western sheriff, complete with boots, broad-brimmed hat, and vest. The only thing missing, Hannah thought as she walked around to the back of the house where Paul was hammering boards across the broken windows, was a horse. ââ¬Å"Hi, Chris,â⬠she said. The sheriff nodded, sun-weathered skin crinkling at the corners of her eyes. She took off her hat and ran a hand through shoulder-length auburn hair. ââ¬Å"I see you found yourself a couple of giant timber wolves, Hannah. Youââ¬â¢re not hurt, are you?â⬠Hannah shook her head no. She tried to summon up a smile but failed. ââ¬Å"I think they were maybe wolf-dogs or something. Pure-bred wolves arenââ¬â¢t so aggressive.â⬠ââ¬Å"That print wasnââ¬â¢t made by any wolf-dog,â⬠Chris said. On the concrete flagstones outside the window there was a paw print made in blood. It was similar to a dogââ¬â¢s footprint, with four pads plus claw marks showing. But it was more than six inches long by just over five inches wide. ââ¬Å"Judging from that, itââ¬â¢s the biggest wolf ever heard of around here, bigger than the White Wolf of the Judith.â⬠The sheriffââ¬â¢s eyes drifted to the empty rectangles of the broken windows. ââ¬Å"Big and mean. You people be careful. Somethingââ¬â¢s going on here that I donââ¬â¢t like. Iââ¬â¢ll let you know if we catch your wolves.â⬠She nodded to Paul, who was sucking his finger after banging it with the hammer. Then she set her hat back on her head and strode off to her car. Hannah stared at the paw print silently. Everyone else thought there was something going on. Everyone but her. Because there canââ¬â¢t be, she thought. Because it has to all be in my head. It has to be something I can figure out and fix quickâ⬠¦ something I can control. ââ¬Å"Thanks for seeing me again so soon,â⬠she said to Paul. ââ¬Å"Ohâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ He gestured, tucking the hammer under his arm. ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s no trouble. I want to get to the bottom of whatââ¬â¢s upsetting you as much as you do. And,â⬠he admitted under his breath as he let them in the house, ââ¬Å"I donââ¬â¢t actually have any other patients.â⬠Hannah followed him down a hallway and into his office. It was dim inside, the boards across the windows reducing the late afternoon sunlight to separate oddly-angled shafts. She sat in the contoured chair. ââ¬Å"The only thing is, how can we get to the bottom of it? I donââ¬â¢t understand whatââ¬â¢s upsetting me, either. Itââ¬â¢s all too strange. I mean, on the one hand, Iââ¬â¢m clearly insane.â⬠She spoke flatly as Paul took his seat on the opposite side of the desk. ââ¬Å"I have crazy dreams, I think the world is going to end, I have the feeling Iââ¬â¢m being followed, and yesterday I started hearing voices in my head. On the other hand, me being insane doesnââ¬â¢t explain wolves jumping through the windows.â⬠ââ¬Å"Voices?â⬠Paul murmured, looking around for a pencil. Then he gave up and faced her. ââ¬Å"Yeah, I know. I understand the temptation. Last night after having those wolves stare at me, I was about ready to believe that there had to be somethingâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ He trailed off and shook his head, lifting papers on his desk to glance under them. ââ¬Å"Somethingâ⬠¦ really strange going on. But now itââ¬â¢s daytime, and weââ¬â¢re all rational people, and we realize that we have to deal with things rationally. And, actually, you know, I think I may have come up with a rational explanation.â⬠He found a pencil and with an expression of vast relief began to waggle it between his fingers. Hope stirred inside Hannah. ââ¬Å"An explanation?â⬠ââ¬Å"Yeah. I mean, first of all, itââ¬â¢s possible that your premonitions and things are entirely unconnected with the wolves. People never want to believe in coincidence, but it happens. But even if the two things are connected-well, I donââ¬â¢t think that means that anybodyââ¬â¢s after you. It could be that thereââ¬â¢s some sort of disturbance in this area-something thatââ¬â¢s stirring up the whole ecosystem, making wolves crazy, doing who knows what to other animalsâ⬠¦ and that youââ¬â¢re somehow sensing this. Youââ¬â¢re attuned to it somehow. Maybe itââ¬â¢s earthquake weather or-or sunspots or negative ions in the air. But whatever it is, itââ¬â¢s causing you to think that some terrible disaster is coming. That the world is ending or that youââ¬â¢re about to be killed.â⬠Hannah felt the hope sink inside her, and it was more painful than not having had it at all. ââ¬Å"I suppose that could happen,â⬠she said. She didnââ¬â¢t want to hurt his feelings. ââ¬Å"But how does it explain this?â⬠She reached into the canvas bag she carried instead of a purse and pulled out a folded slip of paper. Paul took the paper and read it. â⬠ââ¬ËTheyââ¬â¢ve seen you. Theyââ¬â¢re going to tell him. This is your last chance to get away.ââ¬â¢ â⬠He stuck the pencil in his mouth. ââ¬Å"Hmmm â⬠¦Ã¢â¬ ââ¬Å"I found it this morning wrapped around my toothbrush,â⬠Hannah said quietly. ââ¬Å"And itââ¬â¢s your handwriting?â⬠She shut her eyes and nodded. ââ¬Å"And you donââ¬â¢t remember writing it.â⬠ââ¬Å"I didnââ¬â¢t write it. I know I didnââ¬â¢t.â⬠She opened her eyes and took a deep breath. ââ¬Å"The notes scare me. Everything thatââ¬â¢s happening scares me. I donââ¬â¢t understand any of it, and I donââ¬â¢t see how Iââ¬â¢m supposed to fix it if I donââ¬â¢t understand it.â⬠Paul considered, chewing on the pencil gently. ââ¬Å"Look-whateverââ¬â¢s happening, whoeverââ¬â¢s writing the notes, I think your subconscious mind is trying to tell you something. The dreams are evidence of that. But itââ¬â¢s not telling you enough. Thereââ¬â¢s something I was going to suggest, something I donââ¬â¢t exactly believe in, but that we can try anyway. Something to get to your subconscious directly so we can ask it whatââ¬â¢s going on.â⬠Get to her subconscious directlyâ⬠¦. Hannah held her breath. ââ¬Å"Hypnosis?â⬠Paul nodded. ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m not a big hypnosis fan. Itââ¬â¢s not some magical trance like TV and the movies want you to believe. Itââ¬â¢s just a state of mind where youââ¬â¢re a little more relaxed, a little more likely to be able to remember threatening things without choking up. But itââ¬â¢s nothing you canââ¬â¢t achieve yourself by doing breathing exercises at home.â⬠Hannah wasnââ¬â¢t happy. Hypnosis still seemed to mean giving up control. If not to Paul, then to her own subconscious. But what else am I supposed to do? She sat and listened to the quiet helplessness in her mind for a moment. Not a peep from the cool wind voice or the crystal voice-and that was good, as far as she was concerned. Still, it pointed up the fact that she didnââ¬â¢t have an alternative. She looked at Paul. ââ¬Å"Okay. Letââ¬â¢s do it.â⬠ââ¬Å"Great.â⬠He stood, then reached for a book on the corner of his desk. ââ¬Å"Always assuming I remember howâ⬠¦. Okay, why donââ¬â¢t you lie down on the couch?â⬠Hannah hesitated, then shrugged. If Iââ¬â¢m going to do it, I might as well do it right. She lay down and stared at the dark beams in the ceiling. In spite of how miserable she was feeling, she had an almost irresistible impulse to giggle. Here she was on a real psychologistââ¬â¢s couch, waiting to be hypnotized. Her friends at school would never consider even going to a shrink-out here inMontana craziness was okay. After all, you had to be a little eccentric to be living in this hard land in the first place. What wasnââ¬â¢t okay was admitting you couldnââ¬â¢t deal with it on your own, paying too much attention to it, asking for help. And allowing yourself to be hypnotized was even worse. They all think Iââ¬â¢m the most independent and together of any of them. If they could see me now. ââ¬Å"Okay, I want you to get comfortable and shut your eyes,â⬠Paul said. He was perched with one hip on the edge of his desk, leg swinging, book in hand. His voice was quiet and soothing-the professional voice. Hannah shut her eyes. ââ¬Å"Now I want you to imagine yourself floating. Just floating and feeling very relaxed. Thereââ¬â¢s nothing you need to think about and nowhere you need to go. And now youââ¬â¢re seeing yourself enveloped by a beautiful violet light. Itââ¬â¢s bathing your entire body and itââ¬â¢s making you more and more relaxed â⬠¦Ã¢â¬ The couch was surprisingly comfortable. Its curves fit under her, supporting her without being intrusive. It was easy to imagine that she was floating, easy to imagine the light around her. ââ¬Å"And now you feel yourself floating down deeperâ⬠¦ into a deeper state of relaxationâ⬠¦ and youââ¬â¢re surrounded by a deep blue light. The blue light is all around you, shining through you, and itââ¬â¢s making you more comfortable, more relaxedâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ The soft soothing voice went on, and at its direction Hannah imagined waves of colored light bathing her body. Deep blue, emerald green, golden yellow, glowing orange. Hannah saw it all. It was amazing and effortless; her mind just showed her the pictures. And as the colors came and went she felt herself becoming more and more relaxed, warm and almost weightless. She couldnââ¬â¢t feel the couch underneath her any longer. She was floating on light. ââ¬Å"And now youââ¬â¢re seeing a ruby red light, very deep, very relaxing. Youââ¬â¢re so relaxed; youââ¬â¢re calm and comfortable, and everything feels safe. Nothing will upset you; you can answer all my questions without ever feeling distressed. Do you understand me?â⬠ââ¬Å"Yes,â⬠Hannah said. She was aware of saying it, but it wasnââ¬â¢t exactly as if she had said it. She wasnââ¬â¢t aware of planning to say it. Something within her seemed to be answering Paul using her voice. But it wasnââ¬â¢t frightening. She still felt relaxed, floating in the ruby light. ââ¬Å"All right. Iââ¬â¢m now speaking to Hannahââ¬â¢s subconscious. You will be able to remember things that Hannahââ¬â¢s waking mind isnââ¬â¢t aware of-even things that have been repressed. Do you understand?â⬠ââ¬Å"Yes.â⬠Again, the voice seemed to come before Hannah decided to speak. ââ¬Å"Good. Now, Iââ¬â¢ve got this last note here, the one you found wrapped around your toothbrush this morning. Do you remember this note?â⬠ââ¬Å"Yes.â⬠Of course. ââ¬Å"Okay, thatââ¬â¢s good. And now I want you to go back in your mind, back to the time that this note was written.â⬠This time Hannah was aware of a need to speak. ââ¬Å"But how can I do that? I donââ¬â¢t know when it was written. I didnââ¬â¢t write-ââ¬Å" ââ¬Å"Just-just-just let go, Hannah,â⬠Paul said, overriding her. His voice soothing again, he added, ââ¬Å"Feel relaxed, feel yourself becoming very relaxed, and let your conscious mind go. Just tell yourself to go back to the time this note was written. Donââ¬â¢t worry about how. See the ruby light and think 1 will go back.ââ¬â¢ Are you doing that?â⬠ââ¬Å"Yes,â⬠Hannah said. Go back, she told herself gamely. Just relax and go back, okay? ââ¬Å"And now, a picture is beginning to form in your mind. You are seeing something. What are you seeing?â⬠Hannah felt something inside her give way. She seemed to be falling into the ruby right. Her ordinary mind was suspended; it seemed to have been shuttled off to the side somewhere. In this odd dreamlike state, nothing could surprise her. Paulââ¬â¢s voice was gently insistent. ââ¬Å"What are you seeing?â⬠Hannah saw it. A tiny picture that seemed to open up, unfold as she stared at it. ââ¬Å"I see myself,â⬠she whispered. ââ¬Å"Where are you?â⬠ââ¬Å"I donââ¬â¢t know. Wait, maybe Iââ¬â¢m in my room.â⬠She could see herself, wearing something long and white-a nightgown. No, she was that self, she was in her bedroom, wearing her nightgown. She was in Paulââ¬â¢s office, lying on the couch, but she was in her bedroom at the same time. How strange, she thought dimly. ââ¬Å"All right, now the picture will get clearer. Youââ¬â¢ll begin to see things around you. Just relax and youââ¬â¢ll begin to see them. Now, what are you doing?â⬠Without feeling anything-except a kind of distant amusement and resignation-Hannah said, ââ¬Å"Writing a note.â⬠Paul muttered something that sounded like, ââ¬Å"Aha.â⬠But it might have been, ââ¬Å"XJh-huh.â⬠Then he said softly, ââ¬Å"And why are you writing it?â⬠ââ¬Å"I donââ¬â¢t know-to warn myself. I have to warn myself.â⬠ââ¬Å"About what?â⬠Hannah felt herself shake her own head helplessly. ââ¬Å"Okayâ⬠¦ what are you feeling as you write it?â⬠ââ¬Å"Oh â⬠¦Ã¢â¬ That was easy. Paul was undoubtedly expecting her to say something like ââ¬Å"fearâ⬠or ââ¬Å"anxiety.â⬠But that wasnââ¬â¢t the strongest thing she was feeling. Not the strongest at all. ââ¬Å"Longing,â⬠Hannah whispered. She moved her head restlessly on the couch. ââ¬Å"Just-longing.â⬠ââ¬Å"I beg your pardon?â⬠ââ¬Å"I want-so much â⬠¦ I wantâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ . ââ¬Å"What do you want?â⬠ââ¬Å"Him.â⬠It came out as a sob. Hannahââ¬â¢s ordinary mind watched somewhere in amazement, but Hannahââ¬â¢s body was entirely taken over by the feeling, racked with it. ââ¬Å"I know itââ¬â¢s impossible. Itââ¬â¢s danger and death to me. But I donââ¬â¢t care. I canââ¬â¢t help itâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ ââ¬Å"Whoa, whoa, whoa. I mean, youââ¬â¢re feeling very relaxed. Youââ¬â¢re very calm and you can answer my questions. Who is this person that youââ¬â¢re longing for?â⬠ââ¬Å"The one who comes,â⬠Hannah said softly and hopelessly. ââ¬Å"Heââ¬â¢s wicked and evil â⬠¦ I know that. She explained it all to me. And I know heââ¬â¢ll kill me. The way he always has. But I want him.â⬠She was trembling. She could feel her own body radiating heat-and she could hear Paul swallow. Somehow in this expanded state of consciousness she seemed to be able to see him, as if she could be everywhere at once. She knew he was sitting there on the edge of the desk, looking at her dazedly, bewildered by the transformation in the young woman on his couch. She knew he could see her, her face pale and glowing from inner heat, her breath coming quickly, her body gripped by a fine muscular tremor. And she knew he was stirred-and frightened. ââ¬Å"Oh, boy.â⬠Paulââ¬â¢s breath came out and he shifted on the desk. He bowed his head, then lifted it, looking for a pencil. ââ¬Å"Okay, I have to admit, Iââ¬â¢m lost. Letââ¬â¢s just go back to the beginning here. You feel that somebody is after you, and that heââ¬â¢s tried to kill you before? Some old boyfriend whoââ¬â¢s stalking you, maybe?â⬠ââ¬Å"No. He hasnââ¬â¢t tried to kill me. He has killed me.â⬠ââ¬Å"He has killed you.â⬠Paul bit his pencil. He muttered, ââ¬Å"I should have known better than to have started this. I donââ¬â¢t believe in hypnosis anyway.â⬠ââ¬Å"And heââ¬â¢s going to do it again. Iââ¬â¢ll die before my seventeenth birthday. Itââ¬â¢s my punishment for loving him. It always happens that way.â⬠ââ¬Å"Right. Okay. Okay, letââ¬â¢s try something really basic hereâ⬠¦. Does this mystery guy have a name?â⬠Hannah lifted a hand and let it drop. ââ¬Å"When?â⬠she whispered. ââ¬Å"What?â⬠ââ¬Å"When?â⬠ââ¬Å"When what? What?â⬠Paul shook his head. ââ¬Å"Oh, hell-ââ¬Å" Hannah spoke precisely. ââ¬Å"Heââ¬â¢s used different names at different times. Heââ¬â¢s had-hundreds, I guess. But I think of him as Thierry. Thierry Descouedres. Because thatââ¬â¢s the one heââ¬â¢s used for the last couple of lifetimes.â⬠There was a long silence. Then Paul said, ââ¬Å"The last couple of â⬠¦ ?â⬠ââ¬Å"Lifetimes. It may still be his name now. The last time I saw him he said he wouldnââ¬â¢t bother to change it anymore. He wouldnââ¬â¢t bother to hide any longer.â⬠Paul said, ââ¬Å"Oh, God.â⬠He stood, walked to the window, and put his head in his hands. Then he turned back to Hannah. ââ¬Å"Are we talking about â⬠¦ I mean, tell me weââ¬â¢re not talking aboutâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ He paused and then his voice came out soft and boneless. ââ¬Å"The Big R? You knowâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ He winced. ââ¬Å"Reincarnation?â⬠A long silence. Then Hannah heard her own voice say flatly, ââ¬Å"He hasnââ¬â¢t been reincarnated.â⬠ââ¬Å"Oh.â⬠Paulââ¬â¢s breath came out in relief. ââ¬Å"Well, thank God. You had me scared there for a minute.â⬠ââ¬Å"Heââ¬â¢s been alive all this time,â⬠Hannah said. ââ¬Å"He isnââ¬â¢t human, you know.â⬠How to cite Night World : Soulmate Chapter 3, Essay examples

Case Analysis on Low Morale in the Workplace free essay sample
THE ISSUE OF LOW MORALE IN THE WORKPLACE Prepared for Jack Smith Radar Systems Flight Chief Ogden ALC Prepared by Mary White Program Manager Radar Systems Section Ogden ALC February 27, 2011 THE ISSUE OF LOW MORALE IN THE WORKPLACE INTRODUCTION For the majority of the employed population, the workplace can be a daunting environment. There are many factors that contribute to this negative experience including difficult coworkers, lack of appreciation, confined working quarters, long work hours, etc. These factors are the underlying causes of low morale in the workplace. Low morale can have devastating consequences to productivity and work ethic, and therefore must be properly evaluated for possible solutions. Morale is more than people just being happy and eager to work. It is an entire thought process that leaves people feeling appreciated and fulfilled in what they do every day. According to The Free Dictionary, morale can be defined as ââ¬Å"the state of the spirits of a person or group as exhibited by confidence, cheerfulness, discipline, and willingness to perform assigned tasks; or the degree of mental or moral confidence of a person or group; spirit of optimism. These definitions both use some of the same keywords such as group of people and willingness to perform tasks. These factors can be detrimental to mission success, which is why low morale is not something to be taken lightly. It is unrealistic to expect that people are always going to enjoy what theyââ¬â¢re doing and not encounter any setbacks. It is when there is a constant feeling of getting nowhere, being underappreciated, and not having the tools to do the job that morale can be affected. The purpose of this report is to analyze the causes of low morale in the workplace, and to hopefully implement solutions to improve morale in our section. First I will explain why morale is so important in a work environment, and what some of the signs of low morale can be. Next, I will use statistics from other workplaces, based on the latest Climate Assessment Surveys, to compare the morale in each work center within the directorate. This will narrow down the causes whether the directorate as a whole is involved or just the section itself. This will provide a starting point on where to implement the solutions. I will also provide examples of other workplaces that have faced the issue of low morale, and some of the ways they were able to overcome it. Lastly I will summarize the overall problems and solutions presented, and propose an action be taken to remedy the issue. ANALYSIS OF FINDINGS I have been a working citizen since the age of sixteen, so I have experienced many work environments, all of them with varying levels of morale. According to Finger (2005), ââ¬Å"morale is more influenced from the top down than from the bottom up. There is no single factor that consistently explains good or poor morale. Rather, a combination of related factors results in good or poor morale. It seems that it is more a collaboration of different events that contribute to the morale of the workplace. I will admit that leadership and supervision play a large role in the welfare of their workers. I am not referring to only next level supervision but also to the upper management that make decisions which trickle down to the workers. As a military member I experienced the worst environment for morale out of any other workplace. The problem in this case was the upper management. They were ordering mandatory 12 hour shifts every day and there was never any reason for people o be motivated because they already felt like they were being punished. The problem with supervision also was that they were not realizing that the fatigue and bad attitudes of the workers was caused by the 12 hour shifts, or if they did they were ignoring it. I believe a good workplace supervisor should be aware of the many signs of slipping morale in the workplace before it is too late. According to Chris Joseph (2008), contributor to Business Weekly, ââ¬Å"Signs of low morale may be obvious, such as an openly hostile employee, or could be more subtle, such as an employees gradual loss of interest in the job. Some of the other signs are high absenteeism, customer complaints, poor attitude, poor work quality, and loss of groupthink. In addition, other leadership related competencies that contribute to low morale in healthcare workers include poor communica tion, lack of empowerment, lack of energizing staff, distrust of management, poor interpersonal relations, and inflexible working conditions (Dye ; Garman, 2006). High absenteeism rates among the most common signs of low morale. If you were to compare the attendance records from 5 years ago to today, it would show a 22% increase in employee absenteeism. If the employees do not feel like they are in a positive work environment, then finding an excuse to take leave or call in sick can be more frequent. One of the other signs Iââ¬â¢ve noticed around the workplace lately is frequent lateness for work or extended lunch breaks. Since the Radar Systems require many customer interactions just too keep the systems running smoothly, it is of vital importance to ensure the workers are happy, therefore the customers are happy. Since employees work with customers on a regular basis, a sign of low morale is frequent complaints from the customers. Customer may cite examples of being treated rudely or indifferently, or may complain about a lack of follow-up on a question or problem. This type of behavior leads to dissatisfied customers and, ultimately, a loss of business. Another sign that the flightââ¬â¢s morale is not great is poor attitude among the workers. In addition to being openly hostile or bitter, an employee can exhibit a bad attitude in other ways. Some are not offering contributions during meetings or may be reluctant to help other employees. Some also display a lack of enthusiasm toward jobs and are performing only the minimum duties that are required to maintain employment. Poor work quality can be a sign of low morale, especially from a worker who was once a top performer. These workers may have been passed over for a promotion or are no longer challenged by their jobs and have lost interest. For newer employees, poor work quality could be a sign of low morale, or it could be the result of inadequate training or a lack of understanding of the job requirements. I believe we have both of these scenarios in our workplace. Groupthink in our flight has also been affected by low morale. As the saying goes, misery loves company. In the workplace, disgruntled employees often hang out together to complain. Our cubicle aisles seem to be filled with a lot more whining and complaining people. If you notice several low-achieving employees who are constantly congregating around the water cooler or in the break room and speaking in hushed tones, it could be a sign that the low morale is widespread. Now that Iââ¬â¢ve explained some of the indicators of low morale in the workplace, Iââ¬â¢ll introduce some of the statistics comparing our workplace to others. The Air Force Climate assessment Survey is a tool used to identify areas in the workplace that need improvement. This is a great opportunity for you to provide feedback about how well your leadership and organizations are functioning, said Gen. John Jumper, Air Force chief of staff. Sustaining the worlds pre-eminent air and space force requires excellence in the work environment. This survey will provide valuable information to all Air Force leaders to achieve that goal. (Solomon, 2003) According to the Air Force Climate Assessment Surveys of 2009 and 2010, workplace morale has plummeted by almost 30%. Survey analysis showed: Forty-two percent of all survey respondents are generally unsatisfied with their jobs, a two-point decrease since the 2008 survey. While up slightly from 2008, civilians indicated they generally donââ¬â¢t have trust in their units senior leadership and direct supervisor. à The 2008 survey showed that the strain on manpower and time continues to be a concern for the total force. The majority of home-station civilians report an increase in levels of stress, workload and hours worked due to personnel being deployed. Despite the perceived increase in stress levels, workload and work hours, overall retention numbers remained steady with the 2008 survey. Most importantly, according to the behavioral scientists at AFMA, among those who completed the survey, civilians whose leaders used the 008 survey results to make improvements within the organization tended to mark slightly agree or higher to questions about unit performance, satisfaction, unit flexibility and unit commitment. This shows that the survey results have actually been used by leadership to make improvements in the workplace. Now based on the results of the Climate Assessment Surveys, I believe supervisors can use these to implement changes in the workplace that can positively impact morale. Here are some other ideas that can improve morale. * Recognize birthdays and personal accomplishments. Most employees appreciate it when their supervisors remember their birthdays or acknowledge personal milestones. Knowing that managers are aware of employees lives outside of work makes them feel like a valued member of the team rather than just anonymous workers. * Treat them with respect. Treat employees with the courtesy and respect they deserve ââ¬â say please and thank you, ask about their weekend, and take an interested in projects that theyââ¬â¢re working on. * Establish an employee-recognition program. Employees want supervisors to be aware and appreciative of their work. Create an employee-of-the-month program or a wall of fame to recognize workersââ¬â¢ notable contributions. Such programs demonstrate an employers appreciation and also offer incentives for other staff members to increase their productivity. * Check in with staff members. Hold meetings with individual workers or groups of employees several times throughout the year to address any questions or concerns that they may have. Ask for their feedback and reactions to new company policies, and be sure to update them on what steps youve taken to solve any problems. Back them up. Though customer satisfaction is important to every business, supervisors must support their employees if they encounter problems despite having followed company protocol. Donââ¬â¢t let your workers get yelled at or mistreated by customers or co-workers. * Get to know them. Ask about hobbies and interests, find out if they have spouses or children, and talk about your respective plans for the weekend. * Offer fina ncial rewards. Performance bonuses are easy ways for managers to show appreciation for employees outstanding achievements. And there is no doubt that workers like them. * Conduct employee-satisfaction surveys. If nothing you do seems to be improving employee morale, conduct a survey to determine what is making workers unhappy. In short, an unhappy employee is an unproductive employee. I believe supervisions needs to pursue policies like the ones mentioned above to help the workplace become a more enjoyable place to work. Not only will employees start to look forward to their workdays, but the organization will benefit from newfound efficiency. Conclusion I have explained why morale is so important in a work environment, and what some of the signs of low morale can be. Then I used statistics from other workplaces, based on the latest Climate Assessment Surveys, to compare the morale in each work center within the directorate. Lastly I summarized the overall problems and solutions presented. In conclusion, employee morale can make or break the organization. Employees with higher morale have a better attitude, maintain higher customer service levels and are more productive. On the other hand, bad morale reduces efficiency and productivity, spreading through an organization quickly from just a handful of disgruntled employees if left unchecked. emeraldinsight. comemeraldinsight. com WORKS CITED Fink, Nicole. ââ¬Å"The High Cost of Low Morale: How to Address Low Morale in the Workplace through Servant Leadership. â⬠The Leading Edge, Retrieved Feb. 2011. ;http://www. roberts. edu/Academics/AcademicDivisions/BusinessManagement/msl/Community/Journal/TheHighCostofLowMorale. htm; Garner, Robert. ââ¬Å"How to Improve Employee Morale. Literature reappraisal Concept of image Surveies of finish image began in the early 1970s, when Hunt s ( 1975 ) influential work examined the function of image in touristry development. Since so, finish image has become one of the dominant countries of touristry research. Crompton ( 1979 ) defines finish image as the amount of all those emotional and aesthetic qualities such as experiences, beliefs, thoughts, remembrances and feelings that a individual has of a finish. It is clear that the signifier of image is based on their personal experiences. Harmonizing to Gunn ( 1988 ) , the theoretical account of the finish image has three sections which are the organic image, the induced image and modified induced image. Organic image refers to naif ( such as independent newspaper articles, word of oral cavity ) and is described as the cognition or perceptual experience information. The induced image is generated from commercial information ( such as professional booklets or Television commercials ) and enhances the images with feelings. The modified induced image relates to the traveller s post-visit experience . These three phases were adapted by research workers such as Gartner ( 1996 ) . However, Gunn ( 1988 ) emphasizes external factors but Gartner ( 1996 ) emphasizes internal phases. In add-on, Gunn ( 1972 ) mentioned that Tourist experience ( along with other types of information ) seems to act upon the image people have of assorted topographic points, back uping the image province theory of finish image . Tourists experience and information is to some grade found to be of relevancy for tourer image perceptual experience of the finish . However, other types of information ( e.g. newspaper articles ) are assumed to hold influence on images every bit good, which farther strengthens the thoughts . Ryglova and Turcinkova ( 2002 ) mentioned that there are three factors which create finish image. Media, experience from going and geographical distance between state and the analyzed state are the factors that contributed to knowledge about the analyzed state and transform that cognition to the image of the state or finish eventually . In this context image becomes a presentation of attitudes and beliefs with respect to awareness and acknowledgment ( Aaker, D. 1991 ) . Image is besides assumed to hold an impact on clients pick of company when service properties are hard to measure. Furthermore, image is believed to hold a positive impact on clients perceptual experience of quality, value, clients satisfaction judgement, and client trueness. However, Echtner and Ritchie ( 1993 ) focal point on the image of the finish that people receive about physical properties. In add-on, it straight impacts on the choice of finish. Harmonizing to Carr ( 1988 ) , tourers use assorted finish properties for image formation . They can be destination merchandise, monetary value, topographic point and publicity or environment properties and finish services. Chen et Al ( 2007 ) mentioned that the tourer behaviours by building a more comprehensive theoretical account sing finish image, appraising factors ( e.g. trip quality, perceived value, satisfaction ) and behavioural purposes . In add-on, the chairing function of perceived value between quality and satisfaction has been problematic but often neglected in old researches but Chen at Al ( 2007 ) stated that their research survey differs from old surveies by taking history of finish image and perceived value in tourer behaviour theoretical account. The structural relationship analysis indicates that finish image appears to hold the most of import consequence on behavioural purposes ( e.g. purpose to revisit and willingness to urge ) . Destination image influences behavioural purposes in two ways: straight and indirectly . Furthermore, finish image non merely influences the decision-making procedure which was cited in Hubner ( 2009 ) but besides conditions after-decision-making beha viours of tourers. Hu et Al ( 1993 ) stated that the more that a tourer thinks that the finish will fulfill his or her holiday desire, the more likely the tourer is to take that finish. Therefore, finish image plays a critical function in the tourer s finish determinations . However, Bigne et Al ( 2001 ) mentioned that this means that the finish image is non limited to the phase that choosing the finish, but besides affects the behaviour of tourers in general . Therefore, perceived value does play an of import function in impacting the degree of satisfaction and future behavioural purposes of clients . In this research, image is one of the factors that the foreign traveller considers before choosing the finish. Therefore, the finish image is really important. The finish is non merely advancing the finish but must equilibrate the demand and supply which are the satisfaction of the foreign travellers and the capacity of the finish that can back up the demands of foreign travellers. If the image of Bangkok reflects good on the foreign travellers they will return to Bangkok once more. Much research into image has agreed that image can be considered as any remarkable sentiment or intending held of an organisation positive, negative and impersonal ( Sirirat et al 2009 ) . Therefore, in this research there can be positive, negative and impersonal. Furthermore, this research will demo the current consequence of the image of Bangkok by roll uping informations from the perceptual experience of foreign travellers at Ratchaprasong Intersection: Siam Square, Siam Paragon, Siam Discovery, Siam Center, Gaysorn Plaza, Amarin Plaza, Platinum Pratunam and Phan Fah Bridge: Grand Palace, Khao San Road. Concept of tourer Leiper ( 2004 ) said that there can be tourism without tourers. Tourists are people who travel and remain outside their occupants for non more than one twelvemonth for leisure and other intents. WTO defined tourers as persons who travel within their ain state ( domestic tourers ) and travel to other states ( international tourers ) . Furthermore, Murphy ( 1985 ) mentioned that the word tourer is derived from the word circuit . The circuit can be recognized as a trip for different intents that starts and ends in the same topographic point. By and large, tourers may pass at least one dark at the finish to travel. However, Theobold ( 1994 ) mentioned that the construct of visitant combined the elements of a tourer and sightseer. Sightseer is a visitant who merely passes through the state ; remaining less than 24 hours. In this research, the tourer is the key that influences the touristry industry. The particular of tourer in this research is that tourers are foreign travellers who travel at Ratchaprasong Intersection: Siam Square, Siam Paragon, Siam Discovery, Siam Center, Gaysorn Plaza, Amarin Plaza, Platinum Pratunam and Phan Fah Bridge: Grand Palace, Khaosan route and they represent a factor that may be concerned about what they saw of Bangkok after the political crisis in Thailand. Concept of perceptual experience Harmonizing to Chuangchote and associates ( 1983 ) , perceptual experience means the procedure that persons interpret the things they saw, heard or felt from the surrounding and gave the significance for understanding and cognition. Bythe ( 2003 ) agrees that the perceptual experience is a procedure whereby an single select information from the surrounding. However, when people receive the information, they will construe it otherwise. Therefore, perceptual experiences can be positive or negative ( Schiffman A ; Kanuk 2000 ) . Gronroos mentioned that sensed quality is a map of expected quality ( generated from market communicating, image, words of oral cavity, and client demands ) and experient quality ( generated from proficient quality and functional quality ) . Harmonizing to Gronroos, image is a filter which influences the perceptual experience of the operation of the company . This is in line with Gummesson ( 1993 ) , who states that client perceived quality is a map of quality in fact and quality in perceptual experience. Conversely, perceptual experience can be created without experience and cognition of the objective/person. Reisinger A ; Turner ( 2003 ) stated that this is frequently when tourers develop perceptual experiences of a finish prior to its trial. There are marketing techniques that make it possible to alter negative perceptual experience of a finish. However, the best manner to alter people s perceptual experience of a finish is when people get existent experience from the finish. Kazak and Rimmington ( 2000 ) mentioned that tourer perceptual experiences are of import to successful finish selling. Harmonizing to Tasci and Gartner ( 2007 ) , people who stay long periods of clip may hold a better perceptual experience of finish than people who stay short periods of clip. Furthermore, perceptual experience in good topographic point will actuate and back up tourers to go to that topographic point and stay longer. Harmonizing to Hurner ( 2009 ) , he researched about the tourer images of GREENLAND and ARCTIC by perceptual experience analysis. Hurner ( 2009 ) mentioned that in the epoch of the globalisation and increasing competition, it is non merely incumbent on the touristry operator to advance the finish but besides on the parts, and they must work together. In add-on, Hurner ( 2009 ) mentioned that the scrutiny beginnings revealed that Television and newspapers were the major media referred to by respondents. Furthermore, Socio-demographic factors do non look to act upon the image but merely age, with old age groups holding a more complex image of Greenland. In add-on, Henkal et Al ( 2006 ) besides conducted research on tourer perceptual experience of Thailand. They mentioned that perceptual experiences of a tourer finish are critical to its image . Furthermore, if the tourers expected one thing and are non satisfied, the opportunities of a return visit are low . The consequence of this research has found that in both Thai and international travellers perceive sightseeing as the most of import, followed by friendly people and nutrient. However, international travellers perceived that freedom from diseases and terrorist act were the two most of import points to see when taking a holiday finish, while Thai travellers were non concerned about these points. Although the image of sex touristry in Thailand is one that appears to travel manus in manus internationally but the Thailand touristry merchandise has many more positive properties such as civilization, nutrient, beaches, etc. and it will alter the international travellers image of Thailand to these positive properties and take some critical selling. Henkal et Al ( 2006 ) mentioned in the decision, the key to the success of the scheme will be whether or non tourers perceive Thailand as populating up to the image that it is publicizing . Bruinink et Al ( 1997 ) stated that the chief impact on the foreign tourers general feeling was psychosocial effects . When a tourer is confronted with a offense state of affairs it will hold psychosocial effects such as loss of control and experiencing insecure etc. Harmonizing to the consequence of Batra ( 2008 ) : measuring tourers perceptual experiences, it was demonstrated that most foreign tourers had a positive perceptual experience towards going in Bangkok . However, some foreign tourers were concerned about being attacked or robbed, stolen from and being isolated from the signifiers of societal support and protection that they had at place, which is similar with Henkal et Al that international tourers are concerned about the freedom from disease and terrorist act. In add-on, Batra ( 2008 ) mentioned that tourers that come from different parts expressed a fluctuation of their feelings of safety and concern of possible offense. If the foreign tourers have a positive perc eptual experience of safety they would come to see Bangkok once more and besides urge Bangkok to their friends and relations. The authorities needs to collaborate with other related governments such as Ministry of Tourism and Sports, Tourist Police, TAT, private touristry organisations, and to reenforce the investing in the instruction of the locals to guarantee tourers . In add-on, The Ministry of Tourism and Sports should happen out the particular demands from assorted states in order to supply a degree of security to foreign tourers, commensurate to their outlooks . Furthermore, TAT should supply more information on safety at information centres to do tourers cognizant of the concern over their safety and derive a perceptual experience of comparative comfort and safety . Bangkok is the capital metropolis of Thailand which is a concern metropolis and tourers can besides loosen up at that place. Bangkok provides a assortment of activity and caters to all demands. Therefore, Bangkok can be the image of Thailand which reflects the repute of the state. In this research the image of Bangkok as perceived by the foreign travellers is the chief investigate that the research worker aims to happen. The research focuses merely on international tourers who travel at Ratchaprasong Intersection, Siam Square, Siam Paragon, Siam Discovery, Siam Center, Gaysorn Plaza, Amarin Plaza, Platinum Pratunam and Phan Fah Bridge: Grand Palace, Khao San route. Culture, Sightseeing, Friendly people, Facilities, Food, Shopping, Nightlife, Transportation, Security/Safety, Stability of Thai Politicss: Crime, The figure of police officers, The struggle of the people and The violent protest otherwise are what will ensue from the foreign travellers at Ratchaprasong Intersection: Siam S quare, Siam Paragon, Siam Discovery, Siam Center, Gaysorn Plaza, Amarin Plaza, Platinum Pratunam and Phan Fah Bridge: Grand Palace, Khao San route. Datas required The information required for this research are the perceptual experience and satisfaction of foreign travellers through the usage of questionnaire signifiers. Theories and statistics are besides required. In add-on, background information and the state of affairs refering political crises in Bangkok are necessary for better analysis and apprehension. Datas beginnings The information beginnings for this research consist of primary informations and secondary informations. Primary informations will be collected straight through questionnaires which the foreign travellers answer. Secondary information is the information which support this research and collected from the literature reappraisal such as the theories, diary and book. Data aggregation technique ( s ) The questionnaires are conducted in English merely. There are 100 sets of questionnaires for foreign travellers. Each set is divided into six parts 1. Tourists Demographic Data: gender, nationality, age and business. 2. Foreign Travel Features: intent of visit, frequence of visit, travel comrade and continuance of stay in Bangkok. 3. The frequence of Media Exposure about Bangkok, Thailand. 4. Percept of Bangkok before reaching. 5. Attitude about Bangkok while in Bangkok. 6. The image of Bangkok ( Positive and Negative ) in the position of foreign travellers. Datas analysis Data will be analyzed utilizing SPSS ( Statistical Package for the Social Sciences ) plan for construing the information. The information was analyzed on foreign travellers perceptual experience of the image of Bangkok 2010. Datas on demographic and tourers going features were analyzed and presented in per centum ( % ) . Datas on media exposure were coded and interpreted as follows: 1.00-1.80 = Never 1.81-2.60 = Rarely 2.61-3.40 = Sometimes 3.41-4.20 = Often 4.21-5.00 = Always Datas on the perceptual experience of the foreign traveller sing the image of Bangkok was coded and interpret as follows: 1.00-1.80 = None 1.81-2.60 = Little 2.61-3.40 = Moderate 3.41-4.20 = Much 4.21-5.00 = Most Timeline A W1 w2 w3 w4 w5 w6 w7 w8 w9 w10 w11 w12 w13 w14 Subject proposal * A A A A A A A A A A A A A Datas and literature aggregation * * * A A A A A A A A A A A Questionnaire design A A * * A A A A A A A A A A Research proposal digest A A * * * A A A A A A A A A Research proposal acme A A A A A * A A A A A A A A Questionnaire distribution A A A A A A * * * * * A A A Data analyze A A A A A A A A A * * * A A Research study digest A A A A A A A A A A A * * A Research study acme A A A A A A A A A A A A A *

How to Communicate Uncertainty When Speaking Japanese
How to Communicate Uncertainty When Speaking Japanese Most English speakers are probably not familiar with the subjunctive, as it only appears very rarely there. However, speakers of Spanish or French know it well, because they communicate theoretical ideas with if, might, or maybe by conjugating subjunctive verb forms. While there is no subjunctive mood or verb form in Japanese, there are several ways to express uncertainty.à Related concepts when learning the language include the conditional or potential. Darou, Deshou, and Tabun Darou is a plain form of deshou, and means will probably. The adverb tabun (perhaps) is sometimes added. Kare wa ashita kuru deshou.Ã¥ ½ ¼Ã£ ¯Ã¦ËŽæâ" ¥Ã¦ ¥Ã£ââ¹Ã£ §Ã£ â"ãââ¡Ã£ â ï ½ ¡ "He will probably come tomorrow." Ashita wa hareru darou.æËŽæâ" ¥Ã£ ¯Ã¦â¢ ´Ã£âÅ'ãââ¹Ã£ ãâ ã â ï ½ ¡ "It will be sunny tomorrow." Kyou haha wa tabun uchi ni iru deshou.ä »Å æâ" ¥Ã¦ ¯ 㠯㠟㠶ãââã â 㠡㠫ã âãââ¹Ã£ §Ã£ â"ãââ¡Ã£ â ï ½ ¡ "My mother will probably be home today." Darou or deshou are also used to form a tag question. In this case, you usually can tell the meaning from the context. Tsukareta deshou.çâ" ²Ã£âÅ'㠟㠧ã â"ãââ¡Ã£ â ï ½ ¡ "You were tired, weren't you?" Kyou wa kyuuryoubi darou.ä »Å æâ" ¥Ã£ ¯Ã§ µ ¦Ã¦â"â¢Ã¦â" ¥Ã£ ãâ ã â ï ½ ¡ "Today is a payday, isn't it?" Ka, Kashira, Kana, and Kamoshirenai Darou ka or deshou ka are used when guessing with doubt. Kashira is used only by females. A similar expression used by both genders is kana, though it is informal. These expressions are close to I wonder in English. Emi wa mou igirisu ni itta no darou ka.ã⠨ãÆ'Ÿã ¯Ã£ââã â ã⠤ã⠮ãÆ' ªÃ£â ¹Ã£ «Ã¨ ¡Å'㠣㠟㠮ã ãâ ã â ã â¹Ã¯ ½ ¡ "I wonder if Emi has already gone to England." Kamoshirenai is used to express a sense of probability or doubt. It shows even less certainty than darou or deshou. It is used when you dont know all the facts and are often just guessing. It is similar to the English expression might be. The formal version of kamoshirenai is kamoshiremasen. Ashita wa ame kamoshirenai.æËŽæâ" ¥Ã£ ¯Ã©âº ¨Ã£ â¹Ã£ââã â"ãâÅ'㠪ã âï ½ ¡ "It might rain tomorrow." The last thing to mention is, darou and deshou cant be used when referring to ones own actions. For example, one would never say, Ashita watashi wa Kobe ni iku darou to communicate I might go to Kobe tomorrow. This would be grammatically incorrect. Kamoshirenai can be used in these situations, instead. Ashita watashi wa Kobe niiku kamoshirenai.æËŽæâ" ¥Ã§ § 㠯ç ¥Å¾Ã¦Ë ¸Ã£ «Ã¨ ¡Å'ã ã â¹Ã£ââã â"ãâÅ'㠪ã âï ½ ¡ "I might go to Kobe tomorrow." E-commerce Literature review Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2750 words
E-commerce - Literature review Example E-commerce will embody the selling of anything from goods and services by the use of internet using computers that are linked together. Gunasekaran and Ngai (2005) in contrast to Adham & Ahmad (2005) argue that beyond being strictly committed to internet businesses, e-commerce also involves improvement in business functions for traditional retailers. They also argue that it also helps face many businesses tasks including development, marketing, communication, sales and more. These innovations in prevailing business functions radicallydevelop productivity, sales and more. According to Gunasekaran and Ngai (2005) and Shin-Ping (2008), e-commerce is doing various businesses via the internet, since these days the world has become a web in which one has to worry about other businesses, and have an interaction, collaboration and exchanging of various business data with other businesses. However, Boateng, Heeks, Molla and Hinson (2008) there is some concern about the security of e-commerce and this is done through the examination of the current status of the framework under the e-Privacy Directive, and contemplation concerning the inclusion of a harmonized framework in the Data Protection Directive. Their findings show that in order for these connections to happen, there has to be a connection between one organization and another. E-commerce enables information interchange on demand to a unified platform where a company can connect to all its partners and customers and integrate easily. Many companies tend to work together for producing ecommerce platforms whichimprove their customersââ¬â¢ experience as it increases their brand awareness. According to Blythe (2012), Bharadwaj and Soni (2007) and Sumanjeet (2010), for these companies to achieve this, they have to ensure that their websites are compatible with Search Engine Optimization (SEO), easy to use by the customers and other back-end prospective, and it was

Postmodernism Art and Cognitive Mapping Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words
Postmodernism Art and Cognitive Mapping - Essay Example In its particular form, postmodernism was used in identifying pluralistic style in various arts, such as painting, music, philosophy, literature and even films. It directly contradicts and revolting against the "pretensions of high modernism" art (Honderich 1995). Usually, the form is taken as a basis for critical theory of certain work primarily architectural, then later on in literature and designs. It was historically regarded that this was formed by architectural movement to emphasis their dissatisfaction to modernism form (Britannica 2004). Its flexibility proven as it stretched its horizon and encompasses as well cultural description, constitutional interpretation, business and marketing. They are described as a revival of the traditional elements in designing, and techniques (Merriam-Webster 2004). In its easiest description, postmodern art abandons the political advocacy for particular principle that modern art had been known of. Francis Berry, in his work Art of the Eye and Mind (2007), described this form and its occurrence as "the political ideals that fueled modernism had given way to profound disillusionment with abhorrent wars such as Vietnam, ultra-utilitarian architecture, and academic minimalism". Along with this, Barry explained that postmodernism "undermines the manipulative aspect of ideologies by exposing the artificiality of style" (Barry 2007). However, this study deals on the postmodernism significance to assess certain literary works, as well as its certain role and effectiveness in delivering considerable points of the works. Frederic Jameson's Theory. Although Jean-Francois Lyotard, Jean Baudillard, and Jacques Derrida were the primary thinkers of the Postmodernism, it was Frederic Jameson who came up with lucid principle of the movement. In Jameson's work "Postmodernism, or The Cultural Logic of Late Capitalism", it was then analyzed that his theory is formulated with an integration of Marxist theory, known as the basis of the modernism politics. According to Jonathan Clark, Jameson had "proposed the epoch of post modernity with its own economic, political and cultural ideals, and practices" (2007), thus it made him the "most important cultural critic writing in English today". For further discernment of the subject, it is essential to analyze the understanding in Jameson's theory, of its background and initial drive of his project (Clark 2007). Like many of the prior structured movement, postmodernism is being criticized by its contemporary movements. In Jameson's work, it stated in there that cognitive mapping is the only hope for the postmodern art, as the form now has been debatable of its principles for certain political analysis. Cognitive Mapping. Perhaps Frederic Jameson's remarkable theory regarding postmodernism is the cognitive mapping. Craig Stroupe of University of Minnesota (2008) defined Jameson's cognitive mapping as "a process by which the individual subject situates himself within a vaster, unrepresentable totality, a process that corresponds to the workings of ideology". Stroupe continued his description of cognitive mapping. This time he picked up Jameson's comparative approach of the ideology to the physical geography of a person as the concrete process of cognitive mapping. He stated: "In a classic work, The Image of the City, Kevin Lynch taught us

Sustainability supply chain management Research Paper
Sustainability supply chain management - Research Paper Example Generally, such pressures tend to reverberate alongside an organizations supply chain, especially the big multinationals preferably dealing consumer based products (Carter & Easton, 2011). As of today, public scrutiny is on the rise as consumers are currently aware of the fact that not only the final product that needs close observation, but also the supply chain used by an organization requires close monitoring. This paper will seek to research on sustainability, supply chain management, and bring out factors affecting the functioning of a supply chain. Many supply chains among different industries tend to absorb various external pressures, which traditionally act as a reactive stance to industriesââ¬â¢ supply chains. However, several examples exist whereby a number of supply chains used by numerous organizations introduce instruments suitable for rolling out suitable and sustainable supply chains (Elsevier, 2008). Reliable evidence from approved sources maintain that sustainable supply chain management is that which seeks to put into place socially responsible and green proactive products into the identified market. Additionally, such supply chain management introduces performing, competitive, and environmentally acceptable processes into organizationââ¬â¢s supply chain. ... anages and cooperate the flow of information and materials of a company effectively, it is true to say that, sustainable supply chain management revolves along three dimensions namely stakeholder, economic, and social requirements. This shows that, sustainable supply chain management takes into account the requirements of a stakeholder, economy, environment, and society (Carter & Easton, 2011). Nevertheless, it is crucial to note that for the social and environmental criteria to remain active in an organizationââ¬â¢s supply chain, supply chain members must fulfill the aspect of competitiveness via meeting the needs of customers and related economic criteria. Attributively, as theories and principles of management linked closely with sustainable supply chains continue to advance, requirement for extra or rather additional critical analysis and investigation arises to comprehend further the field. As part of looking for ways to understand better the field of sustainable and supply c hain management, this research sought to identify a number of opportunities that needed investigation. Some of them include reviews of particular lines of development concerning the intersection of supply chain management and sustainability. Furthermore, case studies or empirical fields of companies as well as other initiatives of chain actors whose aim is to enhance aspects of sustainability issues needed a closer outlook (Elsevier, 2008). Cases and concepts considered during integration of particularly relevant sustainability issues within the supply chain management also proved to require research as this field is maturing rapidly. Particularly, contributions brought about by the three dimensions of sustainability and supply chain management sounded imperative to carry out a research on them

Sex and Gender Identity: Intersex Child
Sex and Gender Identity: Intersex Child Discuss why the birth of an intersex baby is treated as a medical emergency and the implications of surgical sex assignment (personally and socially) This essay will discuss why the birth of an intersex infant is considered a medical emergency, what especially determines the intersex conditions whilst shedding light on the reasons as to why surgeons deem this procedure necessary to the infant. As well as the repercussions, the surgical sex assignment will have on the child personally and socially in the future. The impact other children can have on an intersex infant and the impacts associated on the parents having to deal with this medical emergency and the struggles associated with their sex and gender identity as they go through life. Physical features in which determine the sex of an individual person are the internal and external sex organs, the karyotype, gonads and the secondary sexual characteristics these appear at puberty. Whereas Intersex conditions occur when there has been an obstruction in the normal process in which sexual maturation is formed, therefore results in abnormalities in any of these features. (Creighton, 2001). Medical professionals are guarantying that surgery to adjust ambiguous genitalia is a treatment planned to re-establish a fitting appearance and function to the infant. (Holmes, 2002). In Australasia, North America and the United Kingdom it is now seen as standard medical practice to surgically and hormonally correct intersexed infants. The practice of this has been continuously justified solely on the basis that the birth of an ambiguously sexed child represents a psycho-social emergency which is when the intersex infants reassignment should be addressed through surgical means as so on as possible. During the late 1990s it saw a swift increase in interest concerning the medical treatment of intersex infants and children from medical practitioners, ethicists and even intersex people themselves. An impasse has come to light regarding the questions being asked about intersex medical treatments by clinicians and intersex activists. As clinicians are professionally bound to take and look after the well-being of their patients, the research in which they are relying on is to argue for early surgical assignment. Physicians believe intersex infants are to have surgery as soon as possible. It is believed there are in fact three categories of distinguishable genital surgery: Firstly, that the surgery is going to be lifesaving. For example, the urethra has been rerouted so that the infant is now able to pass urine out of their body. Secondly, it improves their quality of life. For example, they completely redesign the urethra opening to help the child not urinate on a toi let seat. Thirdly, aesthetic purposes. For example, the small penis is built up so that eventually when the man is older he will feel more manly. (Roen, 2004). Surgery is meant for effecting the sense of gender and sexual identity for the child, and to support him/her from a likely hostile and ignorant world. (Holmes, 2002). Within Western culture, it is significantly committed to the idea that there are only two sexes. People can go years without knowing of their intersex surgery, but for the ones who do know or have not had surgery to give them a gender identity, it can be difficult socially, especially as a youth. Teasing is not an uncommon occurrence in this society. One alarming factor that has been noted by teachers and parents that it is not the intersex childs behaviour, but the way in which other children are reacting to it. Even if the child is normally seen as socially acceptable once his/her peers are to find out that they are in fact intersex, that is when their opinions can change, as intersex individuals are not seen as socially acceptable. This brings up Gender Identity Disorder and that teasing is seen as a justifiable reason to require treatment for this. Teasing and name calling can have a huge impact on a childs wellbeing, regardless of being intersex or not. It can lead to depression , social anxiety and if the teasing got too much for the child they could then decide they did not want to go to school anymore. Prejudice over intersex children plays a role in how they are going to be treated. If a child has not had surgery and is still figuring out their identity it can be had for people, let alone other children to understand. Whereas, if a child has already been gendered from a surgery at birth, it can be easier for the child to identify themselves therefore, not have the repercussions from other children who may not understand the situation. (Fausto-Sterling, 2004). As well as issues with their parents and other children, another social impact on an intersex child can be the trauma associated with being intersex. In large part, the shame that seems to appear with being intersex. This comes back to having the surgery, as that a child is less likely to be singled out and teased if they have had a the surgery and their peers are unable to know of their difference s if they have identified with a gender, which has been given with the surgery. This will then decrease their chances of life long trauma and the possible mental effects on them which can then be linked to depression, anxiety, bipolar etc. (Feder, 2014). When looking at an intersex persons life, there can be many factors to affect them personally. One of these is the effect on their parents. A person can only attempt to imagine the struggle a parent would go through regarding the decisions they would have to make for their baby. Whatever decisions the parents have made, for example: deciding to go through with surgery, which gender they choose to influence their child as if they do not go through with the surgery, what their beliefs are etc., This definitely has a huge impact on their childs life. (Fausto-Sterling, 2004). It is seen that medical professionals are trying to assure anxious parents that having the surgery will then let intersexed children to see themselves as a single sexed person and gendered person. Although, what comes of this is two clear problems that will have an effect on the child. Firstly, it willingly assumes that a person who has not been through the intersex surgery would not have a clear identity, when in f act this would not be the case. Yet no practitioners have any evidence to fully support this assumption. Secondly, it suggests that a typical man or women feel completely at ease and happy in their bodies and their gender identities, and do not have any issues regarding their body image and relationship of identity to their appearance. Yet in fact there are many crises that affect men and women regarding their sex/gender. Individuals may have troubles in their self-image such as problems with how much body hair they have, they may have too much to be properly feminine. Or not enough hair to be properly masculine. Yet surgeries to change the appearance of ones sex, are now offered to parents as guarantees that their intersex infant will grow up to be a full male or female. (Holmes, 2002). This then looks at the issue that if an infant is placed under a certain gender but as they grow older are to feel more like the opposite, what kind of impacts can be associated with this? As well a s mental impacts, there can also be resentment towards the people in which made this life altering decision for this person, for example their parents, the surgeon. It can also have a huge impact on their wellbeing and how they are feeling about themselves as a person. It can bring up a lot of questions and feelings of doubt within themselves. Having the surgery right from birth can have a lot of negative impacts on the person personally. (Holmes, 2002). To conclude, this essay has covered a wide range of topics regarding intersex infants and whether or not the surgery is worthwhile to them and the effect it can have on them personally and socially. As well as the people they may associate with in day to do life, their parents, their peers and what kind of impacts and influences they can have on this persons life.Ãâà How does having the surgery effect their sexuality and gender identity. These are all factors that can have huge influences on an intersex persons life that can shape them into the person they will eventually grow into in the future. If people became more open to accepting an intersex person, they may learn a thing or too. References: Creighton, S., 2001. Surgery for intersex. Gaelic League :: Essays Papers
Gaelic League What are the Irish known for? Most people would automatically think of some trivial fact about something like the potato famine, others the stereotypical views of the Irish drinking habits, and undoubtedly good old Irish American pubs would definitely come to mind. Although these are definitely interesting parts of the Irish history there are many other aspects to this unique heritage that truly capture the spirit of the Irish tradition. The Gaelic League was started with the founding of the Gaelic Athletic Association. This group founded in 1884 in attempts to promote and maintain Irish sports, helped to spawn the idea of Irish nationalism which eventually personified itself into organizations such as the Gaelic League. The Gaelic League was founded in 1893 by Douglas Hyde and Ed MacNeil to spread the Irish language (Hachey and McCaffery 14). Formed in Barnesmore where language classes were held in the national school; the support of both Catholics and Protestants made it poss ible to branch off to other areas (Oââ¬â¢Connor 37). After the devastation of the potato famine and the implications of the home rule; both the Gaelic League and its predecessor the Gaelic Athletic Association had the common goal of bringing forth Irish nationalism in a country that desperately needed national pride. This movement for national pride had some success, but not before the failure that preceded it. There are a few reasons that this move, for national pride, produced failure one was the reputation of the Irish and another was the pressure of politics put on the different associations. The Irish language was considered to be a peasantââ¬â¢s language (Oââ¬â¢Connor 87). Because of this the people of country that were poor and not educated in the language did not think it was worth spending money to learn. Tthe people in the country that had the money to learn the language normally did not want to learn the language for the mere fact it was considered to be a peasants language. Another reason for some of the failure that this movement attained is due to the political pressure created because of the nature of the movement itself. The two founders of the Gaelic League Hyde and McNeil never wanted the movement to become political (Gavin 56). However, this was inevitable. The mo vement caused a split in the people, those who were educated in the language and those who were not educated in the language (Hopkins 129).
